Competitive Research
Evaluating the competition….
Marketing information like this competition matrix is invaluable in guiding the first stages of the project.
Materials Research
“The AVS 200 Autopsy” enabled us to learn a great deal about Altec’s existing products by getting inside one of them, literally.

concept design

Brainstorming
Concept exploration began with brainstorming sessions in which words as well as images were pinned to the wall.  Nothing was too weird at this point.
Picture
Concept Sketching
Many, many sketches followed brainstorming, which explore non-conventional notions of computer speakers.
Hand Renderings
Four distinct concepts were born out of the stacks of sketches presented to the client, here sketched to the next level of finish, including some indication of color and graphics.
In this second round of concepts more attention is paid to the client’s realities of manufacturing and cost target.

Among the parameters already considered in these sketches are type and placement of controls and overall size, driven largely by the required internal components.
Flexible positioning options were presented in several of the concepts, allowing the user to choose where and how the speakers are placed.

design development

3D Renderings, Animation
3D Studio renderings and animated sequences allowed us to clearly communicate with the client.
3D CAD Modeling | Visualization
3D tools like CDRS allow us to make informed design decisions very early in the process.  This avoids pitfalls which force redesign or compromises after a significant time investment.

Even without full-blown renderings, simple screen shots like these communicate volumes to the client about form, scale, and even color.
Ultimately, the final concept was rendered with color, textures and graphics to clearly show the client what they were getting before beginning to build physical mock-ups.
Modelmaking
Upon choosing a concept direction, a set of urethane models was milled from 3D data produced during the early to middle concept stages.
At arm’s length, these solid blocks of renshape are nearly impossible to discern from the real thing.

Communication Sketching
As the styling decisions are nearing completion, functional details are worked out with the client’s engineers through quick hand sketches.
Graphics Visualization
Adobe Illustrator graphics and color studies are accurately superimposed on screen shots of the 3D models.  The chosen concepts from these studies are sent directly to the client’s graphic designers.

Modelmaking
Product samples allow for last minute graphics adjustments.

3D Parametric Modeling
Final 3D data is completed in Pro Engineer, and with the client’s engineers, interior details are added.  Visualization tools like these make tight fits and complex details easier to manage.
